Sick Building Syndrome

Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) is an area of study that takes into account the influences of 20th Century living whereby we are exposed to various contaminants within our home that can lead to illness and disease.  A modern addition to Feng Shui, it is important for a Babies fragile immune system to be in a healthy environment.

Today's homes are often full of chemicals, either in our cleaning products or cosmetics that can result in toxic exposure either through inhalation or absorption via the skin, eyes or sweat glands.  We are also, more than ever before, exposed to electromagnetic radiation and electric fields from many sources including our house wiring, power lines, mobile phone towers, electrical equipment within the home and wireless technology.

Other contributors to SBS include gases, microbes and volatile organic compounds (VOC's) found in building materials, poor water quality and mould.

General Tips based on the study of SBS:

  • Do not wear perfume around your baby.  A study by the Cancer Prevention Coalition (2003) found many fragrances and perfumes to be toxic.
  • Avoid products that contain an ingredient called "fragrance", which is an umbrella term used to cover a concoction of thousands of chemicals.
  • If purchasing new furniture for the Baby, that is not made of natural materials or that has been treated with a finish containing chemicals, ensure you allow one month for the furniture to air in a well ventilated room or garage before the birth.  This will allow the majority of harmful chemicals to off-gas.
  • Be sure that the mattress and bedding is made of natural materials as this is where your Baby will be spending alot of their time.
  • Ensure that the cot is not positioned along a wall that has a meter box on the other side of it to protect your Baby from harmful magnetic fields.
  • Turn off all electrical equipment within two metres of the Babies cot when sleeping.
  • If you are concerned about SBS within your home full audits and solutions are available.
